This issue has cropped up again, this is primarily because some people using pop3 are leaving large quantities of e-mail on the server.

I have to stress that we do not recommend this. It is better to use IMAP for this as it's what it is designed for.

Today at 10:15am the pop3 services on mail.blacknight.com reset a number of mailboxes mail to be unread or similar which would cause some e-mail to re-download.

This issue is due to large volumes of NFS file locks hitting their maximum and pop3 getting confused. As stated above, it is best to use IMAP if you wish to leave e-mail on the server and access it from multiple locations.

Guilty as charged: we're essentially using the POP3 server as a mail backup and thus contributing to the problem.

I've been looking around for some mail backup solution for a while, but have been running into problems with OSX (nsync in 10.4 seems to be buggy).

IMAP would be the perfect solution, but then backup is even more a pressing concern as everything is held by you. What options are there to backup mailboxes with you in addition to anything we can do locally?

Hi Piers,

You can backup mailboxes in your CP under Backup in the left navigation menu. This will if nothing else give you a restore point to the time in the past when you made the backup. This doesn't go into much detail, it just backs up your entire qmail setup mailboxes, settings the works. Hopefully we'll be able to add an archiving system sooner rather than later for customers.

Hello,

Thanks, Ill take a look and make the case for migrating us to IMAP.

Archiving and in particular the ability to download backups in some standard format would be very welcome, as would individual mailbox restoration for POP3 etc, if such is feasible.

Regards,
Piers
