TrackBacks (0) Comments (8)

When: Monday August 16th from 02:00 until 8am

What: Control panel software, provisioning system, Agents on all hardware nodes, mysql nodes, web servers will all be upgraded from version 2.9.4 to version 5.0. During this window access to the control panel will be restricted. However e-mail, hosting etc services should not be affected by this upgrade.

Changes made to webspaces, new or existing e-mail accounts added or modified, new database creations etc during this window would be ill advised.

Services Affected:

cp.blacknight.com - Control Panel only.

Windows Shared hosting servers may be restarted. only if the upgrade of the management application proves to be problematic.

Linux Shared hosting servers may be restarted. only if the upgrade of the management application proves to be problematic.

Exchange Servers may be restarted, but due to the design of the Hosted Exchange no downtime should be noticed.

Qmail servers will have their imap/pop3/smtp services restarted as new versions of the software get put in place. Also changes may be made to LDAP so there could be intermittent authentication issues.

Sitebuilder servers should not be affected.

VPS nodes will have some software upgraded, but end users should experience no downtime.

Domain registrations and modifications will not be affected by this upgrade.

Update 07:40 Monday 16th:

The upgrade is still being performed at the moment, but it's in it's final stages. We'll post an "all clear" notice when it's complete.

Update 08:45 Monday 16th:

During the upgrade Parallels appear to have broken the provisioning system somehow. As this drives the Control Panel the CP is still down. They're working to resolve this issue but we've got no ETA as of yet.

Update 1045
The maintenance and upgrade has been completed. If anyone has any specific issues post-upgrade please contact our helpdesk

Nominet Scheduled Maintenance April 11 2010

TrackBacks (0) Comments (0)
Nominet, who operate the co.uk registry, have given us advanced warning of a major maintenance window on Sunday April 11th 2010.

Most Nominet systems will be unavailable from 0700 to 1300, so we will be unable to process any new registrations or updates during this time.

The official announcement provides some more technical detail:

During this time Online Services including web domain manager and PRSS,
EPP, and ENUM registration systems will be unavailable. The automaton will
not process email requests, but they will be received and queued for
processing when it restarts. All of our registration systems will restart
simultaneously at 13:00, at which point EPP requests will be accepted and
the automaton will start to process queued requests - it is therefore
possible that an EPP request may be processed sooner than an earlier
automaton request for the same domain name.

WHOIS and DAC services will be moved to our backup data centre so will
continue to operate as normal. This upgrade is to our database software
only and no functionality changes will be made to our systems during this
maintenance outage.

Control panel software update September 16th

TrackBacks (0) Comments (0)
When: Wednesday September 16th at 4am

What: Control panel and backend service upgrade to POA 2.9 HF02 which will prevent access to cp.blacknight.com for the duration of the upgrade.

Overview: We're currently running quite a new version of POA 2.9 and there are a number of bugs in this version. We'll be upgrading to POA HF02 which will fix a number of UI, provisioning and general system bugs that crept into our system since the last upgrade around 6 weeks ago. There's also a couple of new features introduced however these won't affect our existing customers for the time being.

Update: This update is a reminder that this maintenance window is going ahead tomorrow morning.

Update: 09:45

There are two issues since the upgrade this morning that are causing people issues.

Firstly webmail.$domain.tld isn't currently working. As a work around, you can login to https://webmail.blacknight.com and use the mail server "mail.blacknight.com" with your normal e-mail address and password.

Secondly all webspaces with php5 as apache mode seem to have somehow reverted to php4. We understand that this is a very serious issue and we've raised it with the highest possible priority with Parallels to get it fixed. The only short term work around is to change your webspace to use php5 cgi mode, but this won't suit everyone so it's not recomended unless your site is badly effected.

Update: 16:25 - all issues resolved and the upgrade ticket is now closed.

As of around midday the above issues were resolved. We were just waiting to see if any other issues cropped up before we gave the all clear on this upgrade.
